The line hunt
Hunting with a pack of hounds is an equestrian activity with a long tradition.
In The Netherlands no fox is being chased, but the hounds are working on a line, usually being laid by a runner.
It is called line hunting.
The runner (on foot or on horseback) drags a line with rags on which foxes have urinated.
Hunting is a recreational event, there is no competition. Seeing hounds hunt a line and hearing their voices is the main reason for the followers to go hunting.
Because hounds are too fast to follow on foot, they are being followed on horseback.
It is important therefore to ride a comfortable horse, that will follow hounds and jump fences, when necessary.
An active animal, which will go out hunting as often as required with the minimum damage to itself, endure the longest day, be capable of keeping up with hounds, jump fences and keep doing it for many years.
